Alamo City Health & Safety continues to be the only San Antonio Certified Medical Examiner to provide drivers with a plastic, wallet-sized DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate ID card and to send the driver and Texas DPS a digital copy of the medical certificate and medical report when needed.

.. Many states require commercial drivers to take a specialized physical examination designed to establish the driver has the physical ability to safely perform the duties of a professional driver. The specifics of the exam may vary from one state to another, but the basics are the same. Those who seek to obtain or maintain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) must take and pass the test in order to receive a passing Medical Examination Report (MER0), and certificate.

CDL Licensing is required for professional drivers who:

  • Operate a vehicle holding nine or more passengers
  • Cover a distance of 75 miles or greater
  • Provide transport for interstate commerce
  • Operate a vehicle approximating 10,000 or more loaded pounds
  • Transport hazardous materials

Got in to see Dr. Gutierrez with no problem. Staff was very friendly. Made me feel like I had been coming there for years!. I have been seeing doctors for years, and Dr. Gutierrez had the best attitude thus far. He explains all procedures, then makes sure that you understand. Very thorough! I'll be making future appointments of this nature with him! I highly recommend him! Thanks to Dr. Gutierrez!

DOT Information

What to Expect During Your DOT Exam

A qualified medical examiner will perform your examination as required by law. Your medical history will be reviewed, and you will be asked to list any drugs you currently take. Your examiner will also perform the following tests:

  • Blood pressure test
  • Vision test
  • Eye, throat, mouth, and ear examination
  • Aural heart and lung examination
  • Check for deformities of the spine
  • Neurological examination
  • Check for abdominal abnormalities
  • Hernia check

After these physical examinations are complete, your care provider will discuss any hazards that may be created by your personal health history and any current medical conditions you may have. Any present hazards will be documented and used to determine whether or not you meet the standards required to receive an MEC.

If your care provider determines that you do meet the qualifications, you will be given an MEC and will not have to take another DOT exam for two years. After two years, you will be required to take the exam again in order to keep your CDL. Some medical examiners will give an examination that is good for three months, six months, or one year. Your healthcare provider will also make a note of whether or not you wear glasses or contact lenses to correct your vision. Those who do not meet the standards cannot be given a medical certificate for their CDL licensing requirements.

Alamo City Health & Saftey now offers DOT approved Medical Examination and certification in a private and comfortable setting. If you require a DOT exam to obtain or renew your CDL, representatives are standing by to schedule an appointment.
